Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Division of Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology

The Division of Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology is a clinical and academic center of excellence. We examine 3000 placentas and more than 1000 products of conception specimens annually. We also provide expert coverage for postmortem examinations for stillborns to Care New England and all other hospitals with obstetric services within our catchment area. For the region, we are the leader in providing a comprehensive “continuation of care” after neonatal deaths and stillborns.  All members of the Division have academic appointments at Alpert Medical School of Brown University and have significant teaching responsibilities in the curriculum of the medical school. At the postgraduate level, our Division houses one the first fellowship programs in Pediatric Pathology accredited by ACGME. Research interests of the Division faculty range from trying to determine the causes of stillbirth, probing the genetic causes of preterm delivery, the role of stem cells in developing organ repair and regeneration, child health, biomarker development, cord blood-derived stem cell therapy for bronchopulmonary dysplasia using rodent models of neonatal lung injury and animal models of fetal alcohol syndrome. These studies are funded by a combination of NIH and industry sources.
